What's going on?
A community museum is a place for residents and visitors alike to gather, learn, and celebrate their common heritage. The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center serves as this all-important link between the area's past and present. The Museum prides itself in presenting the rich heritage of Fredericksburg through engaging exhibits, programs, and community outreach.
It serves a vital role in the community, by both telling the story of Fredericksburg, and by bringing visitors to the downtown area. It is for these reasons and countless others that the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center asks for your support to continue our mission in the future.
The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center, like many non-profits during this past year, has endured financial challenges that have caused us to make some changes to our normal operations. One such change is the closing of the Museum to the general public during the months of January and February. Increasing cut-backs in City funding, grant opportunities, and individual gifts, as well the uncertainty of the current market, have created challenges to fulfilling our mission. FAMCC has responded to these challenges by declining to fill staff vacancies, cutting back our operating hours and reducing expenses across the board.
These changes, though necessary to respond to the financial hardships, will affect how we fulfill our mission within the community. Reduced staff and hours will result in fewer education and community outreach programs. In addition, the closure will cause fewer visitors and tourists to visit the downtown historic district, limiting the economic growth so desperately needed in the downtown area.
